Preventative Diet

Eating a healthy diet is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease. Choosing to consume healthy food helps you reduce the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol you consume, leading to better heart health.

Foods to Eat

  • Fresh fruit/fruit salad
  • Low-fat frozen/regular yogurt
  • Salad with low calorie dressing
  • Grilled chicken sandwiches
  • Vegetables
  • Whole-grain bagels

Foods to Avoid

  • Butter
  • Mayonnaise
  • Muffins, croissants, sweet rolls
  • High-fat dressings and sauces

While eating healthy certainly takes some planning and preparation, the benefits are well worth the time. If you're in a time crunch, remember that you can use your microwave to create delicious and healthy meals-- simply microwave frozen vegetables (spinach, lima beans, mixed vegetables, peas, etc.) in a bowl for five minutes and add a microwaved potato on the side for a satisfying (and tasty) healthy meal.

Eating healthy is a habit that will pay dividends in terms of heart health!
